In the new millennium, it hard to imagine that there still exist tribes of indigenous people called the Machiguenga, living and thriving as they always have deep in the lowland rainforests of Peru. In a world filled with advances in medicine, cures and treatments, gene mapping and genetic engineering, there is still mystery in the every day demand for healing. A mother must still care for her children based on the knowledge and experience passed down, unwritten, from her ancestors. She must care for her children by balancing the delicate and vital blend of knowledge, wisdom and spirituality with the resources at her fingertips.
She is a modern day woman, as she too has crossed into the millennium. Fending off illness with plants and herbs as well as spiritual tradition, she embodies the ancient archetype of a true Madonna in a modern world.
Many of the new-born babies die of natural causes before the age of 3. The Machiguenga believe that the Jaguar steals their Spirit. The mother is applying spots of Achiote dye to her child's skin so that her baby will appear to be baby Jaguar.
